DEA Notice of Intent: Kratom alkaloids 7-OH-mitragynine and mitragynine pseudoindoxyl headed toward Schedule I above threshold

DEA is issuing a notice of intent to temporarily place two kratom-derived alkaloids, 7-hydroxymitragynine and mitragynine pseudoindoxyl, in Schedule I when either substance alone, or their combined amount, exceeds a specified threshold. This follows an October 2026 HHS recommendation revising an earlier threshold and would impose full Schedule I controls (manufacturing, distribution, possession) on any person handling these substances above that level. A separate existing temporary order placing mitragynine pseudoindoxyl in Schedule I without any threshold remains in effect in the interim.
